Emilie Appercé on Vom möblierten Zimmer bis zur Wohnung

3 October, 2021

Book recommended by the Association ProSaffa1958-Pavillon during the reading room session organised by Annexe at ZAZ, Zentrum Architektur Zürich. Berta Rahm wrote this handbook at the beginning of her career, a few years after she started her architectural practice in Zürich, which she eventually closed out in frustration with her profession to found her feminist publishing house ALA. Intended for young women who are settling down at different stages of their lives, she gives tips and advice on how to arrange their interiors, make and reuse furniture at low cost. The drawings are by Helmuth Kurtz and depict rather bourgeois interiors. Flipping through the pages, one discovers many surprisingly ingenious examples: turning a drawer upside down to make a table when you are short of space, how to camouflage a door in front of which you have placed a bed with threads, how to combine furniture and fabric coverings to create a more welcoming bed-sofa, the book also includes more technical drawings to help recognise a well-constructed piece of wooden furniture and buy better.
