Gertrude Bell (1868–1926) was a writer of travel narratives, also writing on archaeological and political topics of the Middle East, especially Syria, Turkey, and Iraq. In 1888, studying at Lady Margaret Hall, the first residential women’s college at Oxford University, she was the first woman to achieve a first in Modern History at the university.
