What if the houses of our grandmothers were the monuments of the 20th century? Nachglühen / Afterglow is an editorial project which looks at architecture through the lives of our grandmothers. In search of undocumented forces on architecture and the domestic space as a place of labour, we search for records by diving into their private lives, looking into backyards, entrances, wardrobes, political documents, and contracts. Our archive consists of diaries, family albums, photocopies, drawings, instructions and lists, gathered by architects and writers. These documents serve as a source for the history of what we call domestic monuments of the 20th century, which to some extent we aim to reconstruct in this collection.

Representing both an archive and a publication, Afterglow holds personal memories connected to a house or a place. As architecture and memory are inextricably linked, placing and organizing them together opens up new ways of reading and understanding built history. In the end, what is the difference between monuments and our grandmothers’ houses? Perhaps the monument of the 20th century is private: a house or a garden, or a chess set, a tablecloth, a briefcase. The more private, the better, because these fragments store memories for the public realm.
