The title of one Laborgruppe within wettbewerbslabor 2025 «Jury Diversität», was refined over nine months of discussion into «Die Liste», attempting to make itself less conspicuous.

Composed of two important words that are often perceived as problematic in architecture, the original title «Jury Diversität» puts them together side by side without a connecting preposition. Surprisingly, the absence of a preposition allows each of us to conjure the preposition suggested by our own personal experiences and interests, casting a magic that allows each to dive into subtly different themes: diversity in the jury, the jury in diversity, the diversity of the jury, the jury of diversity, diversity for the jury, the jury for diversity, diversity against the jury. or even the jury against diversity. Since this makes it difficult to develop a shared theme based on mutual understanding, participants in this group who gathered to discuss the same words and topics end up speaking about subjects stemming from their own distinctive associations.

The freedom to interpret means that the word ‘diversity’ is understood in different ways, which simultaneously creates the potential for misunderstanding. The concept of diversity manifests differently for each individual, which makes it difficult to establish a shared goal. Ultimately, the majority of the group opted for the less provocative title «Die Liste». Records rather than declarations, and accumulation rather than definitive answers, reduced the burden of normative and ideological expectations. In the end, diversity cannot escape the politics of interpretation before revealing its inherent meaning, although it was the most crucial initial term, it loses its existence and fails to reveal itself.

«Die Liste» in Women Writing Architecture is my personal collection created to capture several important insights on urgent topics in architecture that became subtly comprehensible during discussions with friends in the working group between February and September 2025. The aim is to understand the mechanisms of important architectural topics that often fail to be articulated, and to avoid dismissing them as failures of the concept itself.
