It is rare to find photographs that show the ‘interior space’ of traditional Korean architecture. Even though they are indeed indoors, the gaze is deliberately directed outward rather than focusing entirely on the space itself. Using windows and columns as frames, the viewer focuses on the ‘outside’ and adds decorative touches, like frames on a wall. It is easy to say that ‘Eastern architecture emphasises looking out from the inside, while Western architecture emphasises looking in from the outside,’ and this only encourages such scenes.

In that sense, this book is very special. The Wall Decoration of Huijeongdang is a book that was published as a result of the ‘Research on the Current Status of Huijeongdang’s Wall Decoration and Design’ as part of the ‘Improving the Visitor Experience at Changdeokgung Palace’s Grand Hall and Huijeongdang Hall’. It introduces the eclectic interior space of modern Hanyang through the most sophisticated architectural example of a palace. Changdeokgung Palace 창덕궁 is the most familiar palace among the five palaces of Joseon Dynasty, but for people like me, I had never realized that there were so many endless scenes inside the palace.

While the primary purpose of this book is to introduce the types of Western-style wallpaper used in Changdeokgung Palace in the 20th century, I found it more meaningful to see the quiet, still gaze of the palace’s interior, stripped of all movable decorations such as furniture. Quick comparisons to Western palaces with their ornate and ostentatious interiors are foolish. This is something to be explored in silence, slowly.

한국 전통 건축의 ‘실내공간’을 오롯이 보여주는 사진은 드물다. 실내를 찍은 것이라고는 하나 온전히 공간 자체에 집중하였다기보다 시선이 의도적으로 외부를 향하기 때문이다. 창호나 기둥을 프레임 삼아 그를 통해 보인는 ‘바깥’에 초첨을 맞추고, 마치 벽에 걸린 액자처럼 장식을 더한다. ‘동양의 건축은 안에서 밖을, 서양 건축은 밖에서 안을 보는 것을 중시했다.’고 쉽게들 말하니, 더욱 그런 장면만 양산한다.

그런 의미에서 이 책은 특별하다. <희정당의 벽장식>은 ‘창덕궁 대조전 및 희정당 관람환경 개선공사’ 중 ‘희정당 도배지 현황조사 및 디자인 연구’의 결과로 출관된 도록이다. 근대의 한양절충식 실내공간을 궁궐이라는 가장 고급의 건축사례를 통해 소개한다. 창덕궁은 조선의 다섯 궁궐 중 대중이 가장 친숙한 궁궐이지만, 나 같은 범인들이야 궁궐에 가도 전각의 외부만 맴돌다 올 뿐, 그 안에 이렇게 무궁무진한 장면이 펼쳐지는 줄을 몰랐다.

20세기 창덕궁에 쓰인 서양식 벽지의 종류와 그 쓰임을 알리고 있는 것이 이 책의 일차적 목적이겠지만, 나의 경우는 가구 등 움직일 수 있는 장식을 모두 덜어내고 궁궐의 내부 공간을 보여주는 지긋하고 조용한 시선이 더 의미깊게 다가왔다. 올록볼록한 양감으로 무장한 서양궁전과 섣부른 비교는 어리석은 짓. 조용히, 천천히 살펴볼 일이다.
