Malgeum Kim on Love and Ambition

Malgeum Kim on The Story of the Shell

11 February, 2024

Regarding the published art text, I agree with the opinion that there is a standard writing phrase in the contemporary art scene, as the artist Seth Price stated. I believe this perspective also explains a lot of art texts that wander into this specialized field. However, the author, Wonhwa Yoon, uses her unique phrases and words to critique the exhibitions as well as the artworks. The main idea of this critical book is “shell”, which is a metaphor from art and image. When you consider the term ‘art’ as a professional term, it usually refers to ‘visual art’, so the visual predominates in this text, but through the main abstract idea of the shell, Wonhwa shows her critical and interesting thinking behind this visual expression and its historical interpretation. The concept of shell can expand the idea of the body, it can combine past and present, and question ontologies. Various exhibitions, artistic platforms, and online experimental projects are explained using this idea. With the concept of clam’s shell and her speculative flowing stories, we are able to see behind the scenes of the exhibition and another timeline in the contemporary art scene.
