Where is the place for protest?

On the tour of the Kunsthaus Zürich, the guides presented us with quotes criticising the Kunsthaus. Criticism does not leave the Kunsthaus unscathed. It does not refuse to engage in discourse but tends to play a defensive and conservative role. The ground floor of the Moserbau currently houses an exhibition by the anonymous Zurich artists’ collective “Hulda Zwingli”. As part of the Kunsthaus format “ReCollect!”, the collective criticises the fact that female artists are not adequately represented in the collection and programme. They are showing artworks from the collection and protest actions from the public space. However, the exhibition took place by invitation and the question arises as to how suitable a space in the institution is for criticising the institution.
