Isaac Elia Martinez on The Restitution of African Cultural Heritage

8 November, 2023

In a way, this text for me really underlines that connecting ideas to an object is what makes them be remembered and cherished but also creates a memory in a larger context. These ideas can be as general as they can be individual. Tied to something as simple as a place one remembers, or a distant feeling sensed when the object was seen it turns from a dormant crafted object to a discussed piece of art. But for this to even happen or any discussions to be had these objects first had to be displayed and seen and in some cases moved. Nonetheless, I wonder what gives weight and meaning to these ideas and where the authority lies and as Felwine Sarr and Bénédicte Savoy discuss in the text, being moved emotionally by an object cannot be exclusive to its inheritors.
