Anne Massey has been a fundamental figure for me. In her historical reconstruction of the Independent Group, she skilfully highlighted their contribution to the history of art, architecture, and design, offering a fresh and female point of view. She perfectly embodies my idea of the transition from merely “looking” to truly “seeing”.
Beyond emphasising the role of Dorothy Morland, Massey re-constructed a historical narrative that brings to light crucial aspects of our profession—such as the predominance of a male-centric vision of architecture throughout the 20th century and the presence of still under-explored themes, such as the social backgrounds of architects highlighting highlighting class issues that have always been present throughout history and remain a dividing line between the rich and the poor.
